Michigan Solar Sea is the student solar boat racing team at the University of Michigan. We are a team that designs, builds, and races a manned solar-powered boat to compete in the Promoting Electronic Propulsion competition (PEP) hosted by the American Society of Naval Engineers. PEP is an educational and competitive program to foster the development of electric boats in the United States. The July 2021 PEP competition will be held in conjunction with the Multi-Agency Craft Conference, giving our team the opportunity to show our designs and talk with numerous industry leaders.
Our team offers students the unique opportunity to work on a full-scale boat project. Some challenges we face include designing and fabricating a hull and propeller for efficiency and high-speed performance, building an electrical system for high peak power output, and assembling a solar array.
Michigan Solar Sea is established for the purpose of advancing sustainable technology and promoting its capabilities by representing the University of Michigan in the Promoting Electric Propulsion for Small Craft competition. Our mission is to allow members to apply what they have learned in the classroom and improve themselves as students through hands-on projects in engineering, business, and operations.
MSS values diversity. Our members hail from all walks of life. MSS members thrive in the pursuit of over 11 different majors across an array of different colleges. Diversity is vital to our team, and we recognize the value that it brings.
No idea is a bad idea. We encourage taking risks and believe this is how learning is done best. Our members are mainly underclassmen and we want them to apply their theoretical skills to an actual project with room to experiment.
We were founded in uncertain times; MSS began during the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite the many setbacks we have encountered, we remain undetered. Adaptability is an integral part of who we are, and it allows us to strive for greatness.
We are committed to carbon-neutrality. This committment to sustainability is deep-seated in MSS’ mission. Our vessel will be charged with solar energy, decreasing our reliance on fossil fuels.
Michigan Solar Sea is made up of three sub-teams which work in unison with one another to accomplish our goals. Each team is made up of students at the University of Michigan with different majors, minors, and concentrations. We believe that our diverse perspectives allow our team to come up with the best ideas possible.
Hull and Drivetrain
The Hull and Drivetrain team leads our mechanical and hydrodynamic development.
The Electrical team finds the most efficient way to use our energy sources to go as fast as possible.
The Business team makes sure we stay afloat financially and makes lasting relationships with our sponsors.
